November 6, 2008 | "Gotta Catch Santa": Shatner as Santa Clause

There will be a lot of William Shatner appearances on TV next month. First: the big two-hour series finale of "Boston Legal" on December 8 with the episodes "Made in China" and "Last Call". As Paul wrote in his weekly newsletter, filming will be end next week. Second, there is the premiere of the new talk show "Shatner's Raw Nerve" on December, 2nd on Bio with, among others, Leonard Nimoy.

But thats not all. According to MTV Shatner will star as the voice of Santa Claus in the new animated "Gotta Catch Santa" which has been written and directed by Steven E. de Souza. It's called a 'Rankin-Bass-esque' project.

De Souza whose credits include the screenplays for movies like "Judge Dredd", "The Flintstones", "Die Hard", "8 Hours" and "Beverly Hills Cop III" described his new project in an interview with MTV: "You know the emails you always get around Christmas that explain why Santa Claus can’t really exist – not because there’s no such thing as Santa Claus – but because in order to carry that payload of toys on re-entry, the reindeers would burn up. And then there’s a formula that proves this. Or other messages say that the problem isn’t re-entry, but launch, and there’s a formula about the energy a healthy male reindeer would be able to produce?" ... "Well, we start with a bunch of brainy kids kicking this idea around, and they stumble upon the actual method Santa uses – which involves quantum mechanics and a lot of dialogue that only William Shatner can say". "And by attempting to get a photograph of Santa in order to win a contest or to prove his existence, they say, ‘We’ll just delay him for 10 se conds when he’s at our chimney.’ But we’re dealing with quantum physics here!"

„Gotta Catch Santa“ will air - according to IMDb on December, 11 - on a major network.

Image: TheShatnerProject.com
According to Paul, "The Shatner Project" on YouTube will start Thursday with three clips: a welcome one, a classic one and a response to something in the news. The new project will be somewhat different to ShatnerVision. There will be only about 2 or 3 videos a week, but the goal is to go "more in depth" into the life of Shatner, as Paul told TrekMovie: "You will get more of a 360 picture instead of just a peek of Bill’s live and adventures".

September 16, 2008 | Interview With William Shatner

William Shatner talked to the Los Angeles Times about his new comic project, which will be released in March 2009, "Boston Legal" and - of course ;-) - the new "Star Trek" movie.

September 9, 2008 | STAR TREK: Abrams had written scene for Shatner

No, William Shatner isn’t in the new Star Trek movie. But as director J.J. Abrams now told AMC, there was indeed a flashback scene specifically written for him:

"It was very tricky. We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing, but the truth is, it didn't quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn't want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves. The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling. It's funny -- a lot of the people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that."

In the comments section on TrekMovie.com Star Trek co-writer Roberto Orci confirmed that he and Alex Kurtzman indeed came up with a scene for Shatner but he also said, that it "technically … wasn’t a flashback".

September 5, 2008 | EMMY PREVIEW: How are the Chances?

There's only 14 days left till the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards. The event will be especially exciting for Shatner-fans, after all, William Shatner has been nominated as "Best Supporting Actor" for his portrayal of Denny Crane again.

But what are the odds that he'll win this year? Emmy guru Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Robert "Rob L" Licuria have given this some thought - and from Beachum's viewpoint it doesn't look bad: He sees a very tight race between William Shatner and Michael Emerson ("Lost") - with a slight edge to Shatner:

„Both have showcase episodes built around their characters and seize the opportunity with excellent performances. In addition to some nice action scenes, Emerson gets two powerful scenes in his episode (witnessing the murder of his daughter and then a revenge showdown with his nemesis at the end). Shatner is as ham-bone as ever in his episode, but he gets some terrific courtroom scenes that are both comedic and dramatic, plus this is probably his best submission yet in terms of screen time, plot and range. I am giving the slight edge to Shatner since his episode seems to be a little more accessible to non-viewers of the show and has the viewer pulling for him at the end.”

Robert Licuria, on the other hand, sees Shatner only on fourth place: "I don't buy that William Shatner is the front-runner in this category. I think that maybe Denny Crane's time in the Emmy spotlight might be over." His favourites are Zeljko Ivanek ("Damages") and Michael Emerson.

The 60th Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcasted on September 21 on ABC.
